How To Handle Your Period While You’re Living On The Road or When You Go Camping

In society periods are seen as this taboo thing. But ladies it’s something we have to live with whether you’re going camping for the weekend, in your sticks and bricks or a nomad on the move.

As I started to prepare myself for life on the road, I realized how I handle my period was definitely something I had to consider. I used to wear a super pad or tampon and call it a day. But as I’ve been moving to a more sustainable lifestyle I wanted to see what options could work best for me. I did a lot of research and I found 3 that I thought would be great to share.

3 Ways To Handle Your Period During RV Life or Van Life

  • Period Panties (No Really Period Underwear)

No I don’t just mean your gigantic panties you wear during your period lol. There are several brands of actual panties made for you to free bleed during your period. The panties are lined for different flows and then you’re able to just wash them and reuse. I purchased some Thinx panties in a set that included one for moderate flow and one for a heavy flow. I honestly loved the freedom of wearing period panties, but I tend to use them more as a backup in conjunction with my menstraul cup which I’ll discuss next. If you’re looking for another affordable option for period panties you can try these, I realized that I like to have at least 3 or 4 so I bought a 3 pack of maternity/period panties on Amazon.

  • Menstrual Cups

I know menstrual cups tend to make a lot of us nervous, but I have to be honest I WISH I had started using them sooner. Going on the road, I knew I didn’t want to have to think about how to dispose of pads, etc. And when I also thought about how much money I’d wasted on pads/tampons over the years, I was SICK lol. Anyway I pulled up my “big girl panties” and took about 2 months before hitting the road to practice putting my cup in. The more I’ve been wearing it the more comfortable I’ve come with the process of inserting it. When it came to buying my first cup, I knew I wanted to support Black owned company The Honey Pot Company. I also ended up buying 2 more menstrual cups in a combo pack on Amazon just to make sure I had a few so that they could be sterilized properly in between uses.

  • Reusable Pads

I haven’t personally used this option, but I know this is what some others swear by. Reusable pads are another sustainable and cost effective option for you to manage your period while you camp or live on the road. When lookin for reusable pads, make sure you get something that’s unscented and made from natural materials. A great option are these Reusable Waterproof Bamboo Charcoal Menstrual Pads Sets-Panty Liners

All of these are great options on their own but since we all have different flows and cycles you may need to find the best combination that works for you.

For me using a combination of the Thinx panties and The Honey Pot menstrual cup allowed me to have comfort, sustainability and stress free period. Since I have such a heavy flow using the Thinx by themselves wasn’t comfortable for me. And for that same reason I wouldn’t just want to use a menstrual cup solo. Pairing both together gave me a lot of peace of mind and comfort. Honestly, I don’t know why I didn’t make the switch sooner.

  1. Over the last few years I’ve changed my menstrual regimen with a combination of cups, reusable pads, and period panties. I’ve even changed different cups through the years until I found what works for me. It’s a beautiful journey.

    1. It really is! Thank you for sharing that too. I don’t think we always realize that we should find what works for us. Most just stick to what we were given to start with.
